⚠️
⚠️ CAUTION: Intense self-inquiry can cause feelings of derealization (the world feeling unreal) or depersonalization (feeling detached from your body). If you have a history of trauma, clinical anxiety, or mental health struggles, practice under the guidance of an experienced teacher or pause if distress arises.
Scope of Investigation
Self-Inquiry (Atma Vichara) is the direct path popularized by Ramana Maharshi. It involves tracing the sense of 'I' back to its source.
Guided Steps & Practice
1
Step 1: Relaxing into Presence
Settle into your body. Notice the sounds, sensations, and thoughts. Realize that you are aware of them.

2
Step 2: Who is Aware?
Ask: 'Who is the one aware of these thoughts?' Notice the immediate silence that follows the question. Abide in that gap.

3
Step 3: Tracing the 'I-thought'
When a new thought arises, ask: 'To whom does this thought arise?' The answer is: 'To me.' Then ask: 'Who am I? Where does this I arise?' Trace it back to silent awareness.
