Scope of Investigation
This node explores the convergence of phenomenology and cognitive science regarding the illusory nature of the self. Special focus is given to Thomas Metzinger's Self-Model Theory of Subjectivity.
It asserts that the 'self' is not an ontological entity, but a virtual representation generated by the brain to manage survival and prediction.
01
The Phenomenal Self-Model (PSM)
The brain creates an ongoing, dynamic simulation of the body and mind. This simulation is the Phenomenal Self-Model.
It allows the organism to track its states, but it is only a representational tool, not a physical object or soul.
02
The Ego Tunnel
Our conscious experience is like an Ego Tunnel. The brain constructs a highly detailed virtual reality, places a self-model at the center of it, and we live inside this simulation.
We mistake the virtual representation for a real, separate observer.
03
Transparency and Opacity
A mental representation is 'transparent' when we are unaware of the representational processes behind it; we look right through it to the world. The PSM is highly transparent, creating the illusion of direct contact with ourselves.
When it becomes 'opaque' (in meditation or pathology), we see the self-model *as* a model.
