Scope of Investigation
This node investigates Out-of-Body Experiences (OBEs) and astral projection. It combines phenomenological descriptions of somatic separation with scientific analyses of spatial self-location.
01
Phenomenology of Separation
During an OBE, a subject experiences their center of awareness as detached from their physical body. The subject feels they are floating in space, looking down at their physical form.
This demonstrates that the brain's integration of vision and balance can be temporarily uncoupled.
02
Veridical Perception Claims
Investigates cases where subjects in out-of-body states claim to have observed distant, hidden events that were later verified.
It examines the evidential weight of these reports under clinical conditions.
03
Vestibular-Somatic Disruption
Scientific research shows that stimulating the temporoparietal junction (TPJ)—the brain region that integrates balance, touch, and vision—can reliably induce OBEs.
This explains the neurological mechanism by which the brain constructs our spatial self-location.
