Hoffman applied evolutionary game theory to perception and reached a radical conclusion: organisms that perceive reality accurately are consistently out-competed by organisms that perceive fitness payoffs. Natural selection does not favor truth — it favors survival. Our perceptions are therefore a species-specific user interface — like desktop icons — not windows into objective reality. What lies behind the interface? His Conscious Agents Theory proposes a mathematical framework in which reality is fundamentally a network of interacting conscious agents, not physical objects in space-time. Space-time itself, he argues, is the interface — the desktop — not the reality. His work converges with Kastrup's idealism and Vedantic māyā from a purely scientific starting point.
